Yards to Oasis
The Yards to Oasis Program works with Boston homeowners to turn ordinary
grass-covered yards into participant-landscaped showcases. In conjunction
with the Department of Neighborhood Development, the Urban Ecology Institute
holds workshops with residents to enhance green spaces in the neighborhood.
These workshops go over the basics of planting and landscaping in an urban
setting. Participants are then asked to create designs of what they would
like to see changed with their yards, and how they will accomplish and
maintain them. Each workshop provides participants with the chance to apply
for a grant towards the landscaping, tools, instructions of what to plant,
the plants themselves, as well as plant delivery. Yards to Oasis began with
a pilot program in the fall of 2006. Since then, it has continued to assist
people in improving their yards each fall and spring.
