Testimonials
“We’ve met around something that we all have started to care about. The diversity of the people who are involved is making it a neighborhood in a way that probably wouldn’t exist without it, because, what do we have to rally around? What do we have in common? What would bring us together otherwise? Some tragedy? So here we’re in the process of creating something beautiful and everybody has a chance to participate.”

- Cheo Solder, CityRoots Volunteer

Yards to Oasis

The Yards to Oasis Program works with Boston homeowners to turn ordinary grass-covered yards into participant-landscaped showcases. In conjunction with the Department of Neighborhood Development, the Urban Ecology Institute holds workshops with residents to enhance green spaces in the neighborhood. These workshops go over the basics of planting and landscaping in an urban setting. Participants are then asked to create designs of what they would like to see changed with their yards, and how they will accomplish and maintain them. Each workshop provides participants with the chance to apply for a grant towards the landscaping, tools, instructions of what to plant, the plants themselves, as well as plant delivery. Yards to Oasis began with a pilot program in the fall of 2006. Since then, it has continued to assist people in improving their yards each fall and spring.
