Testimonials
“Getting kids outside, in their environment, helping them to be able to actually name stuff and to be able to do water quality testing- that really having a sense of owning a place and taking care of a place has been really important for my students.”

- Deborah Jose, Teacher, Newton High School

WORKING PROFESSIONALS

Volunteer with UEI!

UEI volunteers involve themselves in the most exciting aspects of UEI's vision of expanding ecological stewardship in urban areas. Volunteers support the education of urban students and communities through direct hands-on activities in schools and in neighborhoods.

UEI's programs are excellent for:

-Students desiring in-class experience or hands-on ecological studies

-Parents wanting to give back to their children's education

-Retirees who want to share their life experiences, especially retired teachers and science professionals

-Working professionals willing to share their expertise in the field of science and ecology

Current Opportunities

Field Studies
Reach out to our local youth by helping UEI's Field Studies Program. Work with students during school to conduct ecological studies at various sites around Boston. Volunteers serve alongside teachers and guide ecological field studies in an effort to engage urban youth in the natural environments found in their urban neighborhoods.

Out of School
Extend our curriculum into the after school hours and help students learn necessary science skills and ecological stewardship even after the school day is over. Similar to our In School Field Studies Program, the Out of School program creates a safe after school environment for students to gain a wide perspective on ecological issues. Experiments, field trips and group projects enhance science learning. We are looking for both experienced leaders and fresh assistants around Boston.

Greentimes
Mentor young writers and help kids educate kids through our Greentimes publication. Greentimes is a "For kids, by kids" science publication researched, edited and published by Boston area high school students. Greentimes is then distributed to nearly 30,000 elementary and middle school students across Massachusetts. Volunteers with a focus on writing, grammar and the virtues of mastering the written word are always needed. Help develop the writing skills of urban youth and the science learning of children across Massachusetts. Visit Greentimes on-line at: www.greenscreen.org.

UEI is interested in what you are specialized in! If you want to volunteer but are short on time consider giving a short presentation to classes or after school programs in your area of expertise such as: renewable energy, forestry, birds and animals, nature or farming. We are open to the varied possibilities of enhancing the science learning of urban youth.
