A Fond Farewell!
| We
wish Chris Timmel the best of luck as he moves on to his next
challenge. Chris, former Sustainable Cities Assistant, was a huge
benefit to the CityRoots programs the past two years and an integral
part of many of the community projects that were completed through the
program. Good luck Chris!

Over the July 4th weekend, the Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) was discovered
on the grounds of the Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain.
Six infested trees were removed from the site. The surrounding area was surveyed
and no additional infestation was found. The U.S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA) has inspected an additional 1,600 trees in the area
to date and no further evidence of the ALB has been found. A 1.5-mile
"Restricted Area" has been imposed around the site. It is critical that
no type of wood be removed from this restricted area to prevent the
beetle from spreading.
ALB has caused tens of thousands of
hardwood trees to be destroyed in Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey
and New York. Trees in forests and cities all across America are at risk! Find out if you live in the quarantine zone!

Boston Project Ministries - TNT Green Space Alliance

Two beautiful new flowering dogwoods were planted by the
Junior Park Patrol at the Codman Burying Ground. In cooperation with CityRoots,
the youth have been spending their summer learning about the importance of
trees in urban spaces, basic tree identification, and how to properly plant and
care for trees. They will soon be planting nearly a dozen trees throughout the
neighborhood. In August, BPM will be hosting a community design charrette to
develop ideas for a new park at 1 and 2 Woodrow Ave. Installation will also begin
soon on the new community garden at 106 Norfolk St., designed last year by
former CityRoots Field Coordinator Katherine Foo. |
John W. McCormack Civic Association
The group is beginning the final phase of the development of
an elegant new park at Paul's Triangle, which will include planting trees,
shrubs, and perennials. Work began at the site last year with installation of a
new paved walkway, pergola, stairs, and some planting. On August 26th,
volunteers from John Hancock will be lending a hand to kick-off another big
McCormack project: the beautification of the entrance to the William E. Russell
School on Columbia Ave. In September, local residents and Russell students will
be working together to plant a mosaic of new shrubs and perennials at the front
of the school. |
United Neighborhood Association
On Saturday the 31st, the UNA community will be getting
together to remove eighty square yards of concrete and asphalt from the yard of
resident Sherri Davis, in preparation for the installation of a new rain garden
and small lawn area. The group will also be working this season with the John
Marshall School, to provide two new trees and large planter boxes at the
entrance of the school. Hopes are high that this season will also mark the
beginning of a new educational and community garden at a now vacant lot across
from the school on Westville St. |
Uphams Corner Westside Neighborhood Association
UCWNA has a lengthy to-do list planned for this CityRoots
season that includes tree and shrub planting and installation of more than a
dozen raised garden beds throughout the neighborhood. The group will be
conducting extensive outreach and educational workshops, in partnership with
The Food Project, over the next few weeks to get the word out to residents
about how they can begin growing their own vegetables at home. The group will
also be installing rain barrels and compost bins at a local volunteer-managed
church garden called "Heaven's Garden". Several soil tests were recently done
throughout the neighborhood to assess nutrient levels and the possible presence
of lead in the ground.

Announcing Invasive Plants Workshop
Join us on August 18th for CityRoots second educational workshop of the season:
Wednesday, August 18, 2010
6:15 - 7:45 PM
Codman Square Tech Center 450 Washington Street Dorchester, MA 02124
What
is an invasive plant? Are weeds and invasive plants the same
thing? Come to the workshop to find out the answer to these
questions and learn how to identify and control some of the most common
and aggressive invasive plants in New England.
We will also
discuss better plant alternatives of invasive plants. You might be
surprised to know that some of the most noxious invasive plants are
still commonly available at many garden stores and nurseries.
Please
note that the workshop will be held indoors and will conclude with a
short 5-10 minute invasive plant ID walk. This workshop is open to
CityRoots participants and the general public. If you are interested in attending this workshop or have any questions, please contact Filomena Riganti by August 17th at friganti@urbaneco.org or 617.349.8856.
