Dan Maynard received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of New Hampshire, and his master’s in biostatistics from Harvard University, with a concentration in environmental health. His interest in ecology stems from an active participation in the Boy Scouts of America, where he organized and participated in dozens of environmental projects. This involvement also spurred his interest in hiking and camping, which are still major hobbies of his today. While a graduate student, he researched air-pollution and mortality rates in the Boston area, and it is through this research that he began to see the necessity of urban communities to become involved with and educated about their environment.
