Testimonials
"They're going to be seeing things for the first time. By getting the students up and involved and showing them what is out there as a possibility, it really does expand their horizons. Once they start seeing that, they really do get hooked. I think that's the great thing about urban ecology; they really do get hooked."

Welcome to the Urban Ecology Institute!

For nearly ten years, the Urban Ecology Institute and its community and educational partners have been improving the health of urban ecosystems through environmental education, action, and advocacy programs. Our mission is to help urban communities build healthy, vibrant cities by educating residents about their environment, connecting them to each other, and engaging them in the transformation of their neighborhoods into places where people love to live.

Social and environmental well-being are inextricably linked.

Healthy, vibrant cities are only possible if people are educated about the ecology of their environment, feel empowered and connected to others, and are engaged in transforming their urban communities into places where they want to live. To read more about the relationship between social and environmental well-being, read our About Urban Ecology section.

UEI now offers a quick and easy way for you to volunteer. Just fill out a quick Online Form to help UEI build healthy, vibrant cities! We look forward to working with you.

Our 2008 Report on Boston's Urban Forest

The Urban Ecology Institute (UEI) has just published The State of the Urban Forest Report: A summary of the extent and condition of Boston’s urban forest. The report details the results of the first-ever comprehensive inventory of Boston's urban forest. This data is being used in the planning of the City of Boson’s Grow Boston Greener initiative to plant 100,000 trees in the city by 2020. Our hope is that making this report publicly available will spread awareness of and interest in the forest within our urban home.
